Saturday Spin - Songs of the Summer of ‘22
Happy Summer y'all! As we have officially arrived at the toastiest season this seems like an opportune time to share a bunch of bangers to fuel the sweaty, sun-drenched days ahead. There’s a full 2 hours of summer-ready tunes on the playlist below, and here are some of my favs from that set:
Aurora - Cure for Me
The hook in this sounds like unhinged carnival music that slaps so hard and after two lockdown summers I’m thinking a dash of unhinged is what we all need.
Remi Wolf - Sexy Villain
A strong argument for leaning into those antagonist vibes instead of trying to be the main character. I'm convinced
MUNA - Anything but Me
MUNA is over here dropping a whole new class of amicable breakup song on us - "It's all love and it's no regrets, you could call me if there's anything you need, anything but me"
Orville Peck - The Curse of the Blackened Eye
Earlier this year my wife and I saw Orville live and both marveled at the fact that we were at a country music concert, a place we never thought we'd find ourselves. He's such an incredible performer that he made me enjoy a whole new genre, so get ready to have your socks knocked off bud
Chappell Roan Pink Pony Club
This is like, sparkly Lana Del Ray – Lana takes innocent things and uses them to tell seedy and sad stories, Chappell gives us the plot of a traditionally seedy and sad story (small town girl goes to LA looking for fame and instead finds work as a stripper) and makes it empowering and triumphant. The best bops are actually sad, but a sad that you can groove to.
Spoon - Hardest Cut
Spoon has always been fantastic, but what floored me about this track is the heavy af breakdown out of the chorus - it sounds like an IDLES rip and is an effective sidestep from their usual indie rock sound throughout the rest of the track. I completely dig it.
The Knock feat. Dragonette - Slow Song
I've listened to this song probably 50 times and watched the music video another 10 in the last two weeks. This song is INCREDIBLE. It sounds like something from an 80's aerobics class and the lyrics are so damn clever and it makes me feel exactly how I feel when I'm having a really good day and am in a really good mood and music is magic because it can bottle feelings like that and then I can experience them whenever I want.
Tove Lo - No One Dies From Love
Remember those listening stats I gave for the last track? Double them. The music video for this song is better than entire multi-season scifi shows and the song itself is a pop masterpiece. It's incredible. I love it. I hope you do too.
